Holy Basil

Holy Basil is a leafy, aromatic shrub (also known as tulsi) native to India with a long history in Ayurvedic medicine (traditional Indian medicine). While called "basil", it has very little in common with the basil used in Italian or Thai cooking. Holy basil is an adaptogen, a substance that helps the body adapt to stress. Within ayurveda it is known as "the Incomparable One" and "The Queen of Herbs". People who consume tulsi tea refer to it as "liquid yoga". It has been studied in many bodily functions, including digestion, movement, metabolism, mental health, skin health and inflammation. If you visit India, look for a tulsi plant when visiting friends. A Hindu household is considered incomplete without one.
